Practice exam

Retake the questions from the real midterm, the Oct 6 practice test, or a fresh 29-question exam in the prof’s format: five choices (a)–(e), shared setups such as “for questions 4 to 6 consider this NFA”, and automata given as transition tables.

What you’ll get

  • A bubble sheet with columns A–E, as on the day. Click a filled bubble again to erase it.
  • Questions that share a setup stay together, with the setup repeated above each one.
  • A pace bar comparing questions answered with time used.
  • Warnings at 20, 10, 5 and 1 minutes left. At zero the exam submits itself.
  • Results by topic, your slowest questions, and an explanation for every answer.

Strategy for a long exam

  1. First pass: answer anything you know in under a minute. Flag the rest and move on.
  2. For a shared setup, do the work once (the full subset construction, or the whole partition refinement) and answer every question in the group from it.
  3. Read option (e) before choosing. The prof uses it for “None of the above” and “Both (a) and (b)”, and it is sometimes the answer.
  4. Watch the pace bar. If you fall two or more questions behind, skip harder questions sooner.
  5. Second pass: work the flagged questions, cheapest first.
  6. With 5 minutes left, bubble a guess for every blank. There is no penalty for a wrong guess on most MCQ exams, but a blank always scores zero.
